10 tips for your next business card design – Part 4

We have already figured out what information needs to be put out. While typography is an important element in any endeavour, it’s especially relevant to business cards.

It is of great importance to watch the typography in a business card because the text needs to be completely legible & there is limited space to work with.

To get a better understanding, let chop the typography into three fragments.

1. Size

It must be readable. To maintain readability, all the text in your card should be at least 8 pts.

Remember, you don’t want all your text to be of the same size so feel free to differentiate the text sizes.

Also keep in mind the empty space, if you don’t want your design to be cluttered- keep the text small so that there is breathing space around each & every element.

2. Fonts

Font of the design could be the deal maker. Fonts influence your personality or your brand identity.

Always choose the font which might resemble your personality or your brand’s or the message you want to put out.

A clean and modern sans-serif, an individualistic and elegant script or a classic timeless serif font.

Here are some samples of different kinds of fonts you could play with to enhance your design.

The font could partially depend upon the stream of field of work you are in.

If you are a lawyer you would opt for the subtle colours and design & choose a more formal font rather than a funky looking floral visiting card.

Selecting the font on the basis of the relevant work that you do provides a better design for the card.

The choice is all yours.

3. Color

This is when your brand colors come in handy.

Staying on brand, choosing text colors that compliment the background color of your card, which would in fact should also be a brand color.

Sometimes, some colors might look beautiful together but can be hard to read, so experiment with contrasts for legibility.

The belief of typography is to prioritize legibility over all else. It doesn’t matter how pretty your font is if no one can read what it says.

10 tips for your next business card design – Part 3

We have already designed the card with the desired colours, shades & elements

The next step is to add the necessary text and information on the card. What your business cards say totally depends on you.

Any sort of freelancer would not require any postal address on their visiting card, while professionals who consult face-to-face do require it.

Apart from the dimensions, there are a handful of pieces of information which can prove helpful for you while designing the card.

On the other hand, it could be a strategic choice, such as drawing attention to your website.

The point being, different people benefit from different information on the business card. You could personalise the information put out in the card.

Below is a detailed list of some common choices, so that you can decide the things would like to include in the card are:

  • Name- Name of yourself
  • Company Name- The Company name, except your personal brands. If you and your brand name are the same, you could write the same for the both.
  • Job Title- For the more conservational cards, you could include the name of your company in the card. This also allows the holders to get hold of who you are? What do you do?
  • Phone Number- Including a contact number is always a good choice. Even if you are not intending to communicate over the phone, providing the holder with information for their referral serves the purpose of reference.
  • Email- It is the new norm for non-urgent business communications, one of the fundamental reasons being it allows sending documents as attachments.
  • Social Media- If social media on any grounds holds relevance to your field, or you just want a sprint of your personality up on the card, you can include social media links.
  • Address- If you own a store or would like the business referred back to an address, feel free to include it.
  • QR Code- Not a popular choice, a QR code is a viable shortcut for transferring whatever data one desires.
  • Slogan- Completely optional, any slogan helps with your brand loyalty & adds a little hint of personality.

Business cards aren’t just about giving information but the main purpose is to retain it. People may already know your name, address, URL, but keep the card in handy in case they forget.

Stay tuned for more..

Thank you for being tuned with us on this amazing journey to design you the perfect Business Card.

So we have selected the outline of your Business or Visiting Card.

Decide whether we want to indulge into the conservative side with a mere rounded edges of the business cards or the more explorative side where you can experiment with different styles through laser cut.

1. Adjust the measurements

The next step is to choose the size of your card. This is mostly dependent on the standard norm of the country.

DIMENSION (inches) – 3.54’ × 2.165”

DIMENSION (millimeters) – 90mm × 55mm

Apart from the dimensions, there are a handful of pieces of information which can prove helpful for you while designing the card.

Bleed Area – This is the outermost part of the card & most likely to be removed.
Trim Line – This the intended line for cutting the cards.
Safety Line – Anything outside this line is subject to cutting mistakes. Don’t let any vital elements like text or logos fall outside this line.

Here are some standard size, a safe bet is listed below-

  • Set the trim line at 0.125 in. ( from the edge.
  • Set the safety line at 0.125 in. ( from the trim line
  • The total from the edge of the bleed area to the inside of the safety area is 0.250 in ( 6 mm).

2. Integrate your logo & other graphics

Now it’s time to begin with incorporating the visual elements of your business card design, first & foremost the logo.

Your Logo should be the nexus of the whole artifact.

Enhance it with secondary graphics which would in favor accentuate the design.

One must not forget there are two sides at their disposal.

One side should be used exclusively for the logo, while the other side discloses the basic information of the person. It is totally your choice. You could use the logo on both the ends, but on the other end the size of the logo should be minimal along with the contact information.

Usually people use this same strategy while designing their business cards, but feel free to explore & design the card to your satisfaction & need.

Mostly minimalism is the most popular choice while designing a visiting card but it doesn’t match your taste, you can find & fill it with additional graphics.

Suppose you are a florist and desire to design a card which is in sync with your brand, you could incorporate some visual elements which would help get along your message further in addition to a stunning card.

Additional graphical elements work well for afformately delivering the message about your brand. Without explicitly uttering a word, your message would be out there in the open.

You could communicate you & your brand’s personality through visuals, including the selection of the shade of the color.

If you want your brand to be casual & approachable you could always play with bright colors & even use any cartoon character for that matter if it serves the purpose.

A fun approach for designing your business cards can do the trick, if you are planning to make it friendlier and amicable.

It can be anything you want it to be. Play with colours, shades, elements & make it perfect.

How did it all began?

Before diving into the specifics let’s go back and explore how it all began?

It all began with PRINTING. When Johannes Gutenberg introduced printing to Europe, even he couldn’t have fathomed the impact of the same even centuries later.

What we call business cards today were called presentation cards back then. These were very popular in the 17th century.

Here is a business card of the President of America- Abraham Lincoln. It reads “ My old customer, and others, are no doubt aware of the terrible time I have had in CROSSING THE STREAM, and will be glad to know that I will be back, on the same side from which I started, on or before the FOURTH OF MARCH NEXT, when I will be ready to SWAP HORSES, DISPENSE LAW, MAKE JOKES, SPLIT RAILS, and perform other matters in a small way”.

Even in the 17th century, business cards were largely used by a majority of aristocrats in Europe. The size of these cards were similar to poker cards. There was a trend of engraving the card with gold typefaces.

The cards were used by the footmen of the aristocrat and the servants of the host, to announce the arrival of a distinguished guest.

By the 19th century, more and more people started using it and it became the ‘essential’ item. People used to have silver card trays in the hall of their houses along with a pen and a piece of paper. So, when someone popped up to visit, it served as a catalogue of those who visited the house before.

During the Industrial era, with the rise in the middle class, there was a decrease in the social formalities, & with more advanced and efficient printing technique ‘business cards’ became the need of the hour.

The visiting cards & trade card merged into one. This was most common in countries like Europe & the United States.

Wondering what happened in the 20th century?

‘Business cards’ became an essential element for both companies & individuals. Companies used to hand out business cards to its customers. It became a necessity, an essential. It was considered a sign of professionalism and discipline. It also allows you to put a face to the brand or an individual, there is assurance of a point of contact in the exchange of the card, a different customized card for yoChur vision.
