The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Set in a troubled America that hides a hidden torrent of violence under its skin, serial killer Jonathan Demme's harsh procedure borders on the horror of the Great Guignol. It's unusual to find your savior in the shoes of a female law enforcement officer - FBI intern Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster, mixing strength and vulnerability) - "The Silence of the Lambs" divides the horrors between grotesque moths, a bloodthirsty butcher of women, and cannibalistic Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a nightmarishly manipulative employee with a taste for liver and beans. Lambs is one of the greatest films of the 90s and a rare Oscar-winning thriller.

39 Steps (1935)

Alfred Hitchcock's early thriller, the best of his British films, places an unfortunate innocent at the center of a spy plot, cementing many of the hallmarks of the genre. The plot of "the wrong man" is Hitchcock's main product, automatically investing us in the thrill on the screen: will our hero find a way out of a dangerous world? There are moments of humorous humor here, like when an anthem in a coat pocket conveniently stops a bullet mixed with uncertain anticipation, and of course there's the magnetic blonde (Madeleine Carroll) who gets tangled up in the action. All these elements add up to a wild ride that represents one of the most complete flourishes of the master's style.

The Maltese Falcon (1941)
John Huston's magnificent adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's noir influenced him so much that it's hard to know which parts to praise first: the plot is tightly pressed; the villains are indelibly slippery (especially Sidney Greenstreet's "Fat Man" and Peter Lorre's "Joel Cairo"); Mary Astor's Femme Fatale is a sexual immoral joy; and the titular MacGuffin, a black statuette, is so iconic that the prop itself fetched $4 million at auction. (That's a lot for a 12-inch bird that was once dropped on Humphrey Bogart's foot during a shooting.) Then what about the hero? Sam Spade is everything you need from noir cachou: a smart whip, stubborn, brash, and unflappable pea shooter that you've pointed out. It's not even that he's a particularly nice guy, but that everything around him is much worse.

Double Indemnity (1944)

Film noir is no more iconic than Billy Wilder's story about an insurance salesman (Fred McMurray) who is deceived by a femme fatale (Barbara Stanwyck) who intends to kill her husband. Watching the movie with its shadows and the lecherous seduction of Stanwyck means losing yourself in a gritty and mysterious world that has influenced countless films since.
